From his profile in Find A Grave: "Was a farm boy that wanted to go to war to do his part. He enlisted in the Navy for WWII when he was 16 or 17 and was killed when a Japanese sub torpedoed the USS LISCOME BAY off Makin Atoll. He had joined the ship shortly before in Long Beach, CA."
Marvin is memorialized at the National Cemetery of the Pacific Punch Bowl Crater in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he is listed in the Courts of the Missing.
The Purple Heart was awarded him posthumously.
Background on the USS LISCOME BAY:
The escort carrier USS LISCOME BAY was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine, I-175, early in the morning of 24 Nov 1943. The LISCOME BAY was the flagship of a three-carrier task group, providing close air support for the Marine landings on Tarawa and Makin Islands, which had started on November 20th. The LISCOME BAY caught fire and sank less than 25 minutes after taking a torpedo in the engine room. Only 272 of her crew were rescued, 645 crewmen were lost. This was the LISCOME BAY's first war cruise.
