Census Data

Richmond first appears on the 1841 England & Wales Census. He is aged approximately 20, and no employment data is given for him.[13]

Richmond appears on the 1851 England & Wales Census, aged approximately 34. He and his family are residing in Wanstrow, Frome, Somerset; he is aged approximately 34 and is employed as a toll collector, living with his wife Edith and their children: Mary, 6; Emily, 4; Abraham, 2; and Wyndham, 1. [14] An image of the register is available to view at Ancestry.com.

He then appears on the 1861 England and Wales census. He is aged approximately 42, and here his birth locality is given as Cranmore, Somerset. His employment is given as "Gardner(sic) (Domestic)". His family is now resising in Wells St Cuthbert, Somerset, and he and Edith have been joined by two additional children. The children are given as follows: Emily, 14; Abraham, 13; Wyndham, 11; Richmond J(ohn), 8; and Edith, 4.[15] An image of the register is available to view at Ancestry.com.

On the 1871 England & Wales Census, Richmond is now approximately 52 years old and remains employed as a gardener, a profession his son Wyndham has now joined him in; Richmond John is given as emplpyed as a Gardener Apprentice. Richmond and Edith now reside in Wells St Thomas, with the following of their children: Wyndham, 21; Richmond J(ohn), 18; Edith K(eturah), 14; Thomas H, 9; and Edward I, 8.[16]

No entry for the 1881 England & Wales Census has been identified for Richmond at this time, more research is needed.

Richmond's final census appearance is in the 1891 England & Wales Census. He is residing in the Shepton Mallet Union Workhouse, his fortunes having fallen greatly since his bigamy and imprisonment. He was aged 75 at the time, marked as widowed, even though Edith did not die until1892 and his bigamous marriage having been invalidated, with his employment listed yet again as a gardener.[17] An image of the census is available to view on Ancestry.com.

Scandal

Richmond married one Mary Ann Hunt while still married to Edith, having apparently separated. He was jailed on 15 October 1878 at the age of 61 for the crime of bigamy. The offense reads as follows:

"Feloniously marrying Mary Ann Hunt at Frome, on 9th May 1878, his former wife Edith Batt to whom he was previously married being then alive."

He was sentenced to 6 months hard labor at Shepton, and was set to be released from prison on the 6th of May, 1879.[18] An image of the gaol register is available to view on Ancestry.com. The marriage record in question shows Richmond used the false name of John in order to avoid detection, with one Annie Eliza Gibbons and one Alfred Whittaker as witness. An image of the civil marriage register is available to view at Ancestry.com.

Note: due to the marriage being invalid, I have declined to add a marriage link for Mary Ann Hunt at this time. Question referred to EP Leadership for further guidance. - S. Grimaldi 2023OCT101252EST

Death & Burial

Richmond died at Shepton Mallet on 08 May 1897, and was buried with Edith, sharing the same tombstone.[19]

Note: despite the spelling of his name being quite clearly Richmond on the gravestone, the Find-A-Grave entry gives his name as Raymond.
