Richard Barton was an early New Zealand colonist, farmer, land surveyor, explorer and politician. He was the first European settler in the Upper Hutt valley where he established an estate he named Trentham, which is now a suburb of Upper Hutt. Much of his original estate forms Trentham Memorial Park and he preserved a significant remanent of the pre-European lowland forest that once covered the Hutt Valley, which is found within the park and is now known as Barton's bush.
