Parish Register:.Gravesend, Kent, baptised 23 May 1823, son of Robert (Publican) and Mary Ann Barnes
In his father's will (1855) he is described as a "trunk and box maker" of London. He inherited two freehold houses built on his father's land in Higham (Kent).
Perhaps on the proceeds of his father’s bequest, and with the aim of starting a new life, James embarked in the autumn of 1859 on the vessel “African” for a passage to New Zealand. In his company was another native of Kent, Caroline Parker (36). Her circumstances at that time are unclear. She was married to a London carpenter, Thomas Knott Parker, by whom she had had several children, none of whom survived. Parker appears to have been destitute and unable to support is wife.
1860, Jan 31. James and Caroline Barnes arrived in New Zealand from England, having departed the Port of Plymouth on 11 October 1859. [1]
