James Albert Banks was born on 4 March 1798 in Dunnet, Caithness, Scotland.
James married Christina Crear (born 1801 in Dunnet, United Kingdom; daughter of Helen (Sutherland) Crear-Creach (1774–1855)).
Their daughter was Jean Banks (1833–1867).
James died in 1880, aged 81.
