Page 17. “Alfred Baldwin’s folks had for centuries been Shropshire yeomen; he could count among his ancestors country parsons and Quaker missionaries to the American colonies. His grandfather, Thomas Baldwin from Corvedale, had decided to leave the ranks of the minor gentry and had established an iron foundry in 1768 at Stourport-on-Severn within the Worcestershire borders. Trading as Baldwin and Son the firm was located near the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal that was officially opened soon after. The Baldwins were a large family and involved in almost every trade in the town; in fact they were to play a major role in the development and increasing prosperity of Stourport that Brindley’s canal made possible, providing the town with gas in 1824, before the City of London could claim this. It was a family achievement which Stanley Baldwin seemed to have taken pride in, drawing attention to this in an address at Stourport a century later.
