Biography

David Balderston was born in Scotland.

David was born in 1824 in Glasgow, the son of Alexander Balderston, Esq. and Eliza Wardrop.

David Balderston migrated from Scotland to New Zealand.

It is said that he followed commercial pursuits in the West Indies in his early life.

David married and he and his wife emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand. They arrived in the year of 1859 on board the John Scott.

When they first arrived in New Zealand, David was employed in Mauku by Robert Bailey Lusk (senior) on his farm. The times were perilous with the New Zealand Wars on their doorstep.

The couple then settled in the Kaiwaka area (now in Northland) and lived there for about 25 years. He was his district's first representative to the County Council (Hobson District). He was chairman of the district Road Board for many years.

He passed away in 1892.

His death notice read:

BALDERSTON.—On December 3, at his residence, Woodburn, Kaiwaka, David Balderston, eldest and only surviving son of the late Alexander Balderston, Esq., Bath-street, Glasgow; in his 69th year. (NEW ZEALAND HERALD, VOLUME XXIX, ISSUE 9060, 13 DECEMBER 1892)
