Birth
Robert Erwin Bain was born on 17 April 1916 in Drumaness, County Down, Ireland. He was the first-born son of Edwin Bain, a flax dresser, and Rachel Simpson. [1][2] He was known as "Erwin" (according to family recollections). Erwin was born four months after his parents were married. He was likely named after his paternal grandfather: Robert Erwin Bain.
Death
Erwin died from meningitis at age 3 in September 1919. His parents were living in Magheralone townland in the parish of Kilmore at the time. His father was present at his death and was the informant for his death record. [3][4] Erwin was buried in the Magheradroll Church of Ireland Cemetery in Ballynahinch. His grave remains unmarked as a grassy patch near the church door. His grandfather and namesake Sergeant Robert Erwin Bain would be buried with him upon his death in 1922. [5]
Two years after his death, Erwin’s parents named another son Robert Erwin Bain who would go on to live a long and fruitful life.
