Biography

John Bain was born about 1784 and died in 1853.

Buried Ballachly Cem., Par. of Latheron, Caithness, Scotland, 58.382388,-3.380853

Headstone: "Erected by Alexr Bain, Melbourne in memory of his beloved parents John Bain, Clashcriby Forse who died 17th Jun 1853 Aged 72 years. Catherine Gray who died 8th Jan 1865 aged 74 Years Also his brother James Bain who died 1st Mar 1879 Aged 54 years. Also his sister Jane Bain who died 10th Mar 1845 aged 15 years. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. "

It is next door to a grave that is noted in the MI booklet as "This grave never to be opened".

Military

John was a foot soldier in the 79th Regiment of Foot.

On the eve of Waterloo, he was shot in the right shoulder at Quartrebras, to which event we presumably owe his survival until 1853.

Pity such a tough old soldier didn't last a couple more years until civil registration in Scotland so that we know who his parents were!

DNA

A descendant of grandson James (marr. Helen SUTHERLAND) belongs to haplogroup R-M269, but has no close matches at 67 markers.

Would be good to confirm the dna signature for John.
