At the age of about 18 Robert emigrated from England to New Zealand with his parents and two siblings Ann and John, travelling on the ship Greyhound. They departed London on 21 January 1865, arriving into Lyttelton, Canterbury on 7 May 1865. Also with them was his brother John's wife Sarah[2]:

ARRIVAL OF THE GREYHOUND - The ship Greyhound, Captain Wright, arrived at her anchorage yesterday at 2pm. She left Gravesend on Sunday, January 22, arriving off the Start on the 24th, where she landed the pilot. Experienced a heavy gale in the Channel on the 30th, and a very heavy sea which stove in one of her life-boats. Crossed the line on 1st of March. In longitude 36deg., 22min., 51sec., W passed the meridian of the Cape on March 29. Sighted Hogg Island on April 7. On April 16 she shipped several heavy seas down the hatchways, and her quarter-boat was smashed to pieces. Arrival off the Peninsula on Sunday last [May 7th], and anchored in harbour as above. She is fitted with Graveley and Co's distilling apparatus, capable of distilling 400 gallons per day.[3]
His brother John died in 1873. Four years later his married sister Ann died on 4 January 1877 in Christchurch Hospital. His mother died in 1885 at the age of 74, and his father died in 1891 at the age of 83.
Robert and Agnes farmed at Loburn in Canterbury.
His wife Agnes died in 1912. His eldest daughter Maud died in 1921 at the age of 51.
He passed away in 1925 at the age of 77[5] and is buried in St Johns Anglican Cemetery in Rangiora, Canterbury[6]. PLOT: Row L, Plot 595
