Research Notes

Alburgh, Vermont was renamed Alburg, Vermont in 1891. [4]

The Babcock Genealogy lists James & Lovey's first child as born in 1843, so an estimated marriage year of 1842 is used for James & Lovey's marriage. They married in Vermont, though, so this estimate may need to be adjusted once the birth location of first child Susan M is identified. Their second child, Charles B, was born in Wisconsin.

Residence (1850, 1860) Troy, Walworth, Wisconsin, USA

Per 1850 census James Babcock was a Farmer with real estate value set at $1500. He is listed as being born in Vermont same as Lovey his wife. Their son Charles Babcock is listed as being born in Wisconsin and at the age of 4 attended school. The farm laborer Stephen Cooper is listed as born in England and couldn’t read or write.

The 1860 census includes James, his wife Lovey, 5 children and Ester (Esther) Harrison who appears to be engaged as domestic help for the Babcock family. She was born in Ohio in approximately 1838. After Lovey's death in 1860, Esther (Daniels) Harrison becomes James' second wife.

According to The Babcock Genealogy, James had 7 children with his first wife and 2 with his second. His second marriage with Esther was in Wisconsin on 18 Feb 1861. (The Babcock Genealogy and the Wisconsin, Marriage Index, 1820 - 1907 indicates James & Esther's marriage was 18 Feb 1861while the index on Family Search in Wisconsin, County Marriages, 1836 - 1911 indicates a marriage date of 11 Feb 1861.)

The Wisconsin, Marriage Index, 1820-1907 confirm this marriage as in volume 2, page 491, there are individual entries for each of Esther Harrison and James Babcock marrying on 18 Feb 1861 in Walworth, Wisconsin, USA. This Wisconsin marriage has not been located in another repository yet where the source can be seen directly.

According to The Babcock Genealogy p. 250, James' children mentioned are as follows:

Children from first marriage to Lovey Roberts
  1. Susan M, 29 Jul 1843 - 09 Sep 1843
  2. Charles B, b. 11 Aug 1845, residence 1902 Center, Wisconsin

  2. Willie G, b. 06 Mar 1864

Note there is a FindAGrave entry for Susan Babcock, daughter of James & Lovey, where the dates on the memorial do not match with the dates in The Babcock Genealogy. Susan's gravestone does not have any dates on it per the photo at the FindAGrave memorial.

Susan Babcock on Find A Grave: Memorial #132506999 retrieved 13 Oct 2019

Note the 1860 census lists children Justina and Wesley as the same age, so they're likely twins as of that account. Wesley is not mentioned in The Babcock Genealogy, unless he is James W.

James Babcock and Esther Daniels Harrison Babcock are my 4th paternal great grandparents. Interestingly enough, they are both descended from Rev. Joseph Hull. James is from his first marriage and Esther is from his 2nd marriage, Many years ago. I read something but now can not find source, that Lovey Roberts Babcock, may have died from Huntington's Disease which would account for her ealy demise and the fact that Esther was not just household help but also helped with the children and caring for Lovey in her last days. I think Andrew Simpier and I are 4th cousins.

He ended up in Wisconsin? Wow he went west? Interesting. My 4th great grandma Amy Babcock Gibbs is his sister and she lived in Vermont with Samuel Gibbs her husband
