William Mallars Fitz Austen [1] was born about 1829 [2] and died in 1905.
Or so I ( Lorna) now believe - see Research notes and the assorted rather confusing and misleading records (that seem to be a family trait) that lead me to this conclusion. I'd love to hear from anyone connected to these families.

Research Notes
Original questions:
Who were William's parents?
What happened to him after his arrival in Melbourne?
The progress and subsequent questions
William's birth / baptism - closest candidate to date is an 1835 baptism in Lambeth of a William Mallars FITZAUSTIN to Daniel and Caroline FITZAUSTIN, which would have to be a late baptism. The entry has no birth date or indication of this.
Actual surname. The above 1835 baptism does seem likely given daughter Ada is enumerated in 1881 as Ada H L (indexed as S) FITZAUSTIN, visitor in the hsehold of her step sister Sarah Elizabeth THOMPSON nee BIGGS
Sightings prior to the 1869 birth cert. of twins William and Ada, particularly 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. I've never satisfactorily found the William I want this to be in 1841 or 1851 before he married and emigrated to Australia.
Marriage to Sarah (found see source in family section above, thanks to RootsChat posting)
Who is Julia in 1871 census? She is listed out of order on the schedule, and there's 6 years between Julia and William Edward/Ada. My current working assumption is that she belongs to Sarah but not William
Whose aunt is Hannah Mallars in the 1871 census? William's or Sarah's? (Looks to be William's given his string of forenames and the discovery of baptisms of a Caroline and a Hannah 1809 and 1804 respectively to George and Mary MALLARS)
Deaths of William (found - see extract above) & Sarah
Confirmation of 1869 marriage cert. excerpts stating father as Robert AUSTEN, solicitor, dec'd (latter snippet seems unlikely but in keeping with the family providing misleading info!)
Lorna would welcome hearing from any descendants of William who may care to help see if DNA would turn up any further clues as to his origins.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
