Biography

On May 11, 1829, William Augustus AUSTIN, son of Francis Frederick AUSTIN and Lucretia HALL was born at Quebec City, Lower Canada, Province of Canada, British North America.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

On June 11, 1832, William was privately baptized as an Anglican at the Quebec Garrison in Quebec City.[1]

On January 11, 1851, William, age 20 years, his parents Francis and Lucretia and his siblings, Francis, Henry, George, Maria, and Edmund were living at St Rochs, Quebec City. William was a student studying surveying.[2]

William was a Protestant.[2]

On January 13, 1861, William, his wife, Mary, their children, Lucretia, Clements and Francis and two servants where residing at Ottawa, Carleton County, Canada West.[3]

By 1871, William’s religion was Plymouth Brethren.[4][5][8]

William was a Civil Engineer.[4][5][7]

On April 2, 1871, William, age 41 years, his wife, Mary and their children, Lucretia, Clements, Francis, George, Mary, Helena, Maud, William and Herbert were residing at Gloucester Township, Russell County, Ontario. William’s religion was the Church of Brethren which differs from that of his wife, Mary whose religion was the Church of England.[4]

On April 4, 1881, William, age 53 years, his wife, Mary and their children, Hugo, Mary, Helena, Maud ,William, Herbert, Vernon and Adella were living at Gloucester Township.[5]

CENSUS 1881

On June 7, 1883, at the age of 54 years, William was appointed to the position of Surveyor and Chief Draughtsman with the Department of Indian Affairs.[6]

On April 6, 1891, William, age 62 years, his wife, Mary and their children, Mary, Maud, William, Herbert, Vernon, Adella and Vivian were residing at Gloucester Township.[7]

CENSUS 1891

On December 27, 1896, William, age 65 years, passed away at Gloucester Township. His cause of death was a malignant abdominal tumour. He also suffered from rheumatism. His residence was at Montreal Road, Gloucester Township.[8][9]

DEATH REGISTRATION

On December 29, 1896, William was buried at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. He is buried with his wife Mary and his children Claude, Helena, Clements and William and Maude.[9][10]

On May 19, 1927, Mary applied for a Civil Service Widow’s Pension at Ottawa.[6]

William Augustus AUSTIN was born 11 May 1829. He was the son of Captain Francis AUSTIN of the 76th Regiment of Foot, and expressed interest in entering the army in March 1847. In a letter to Major Talbot written 1 May 1847, the Military Secretary reported that AUSTIN had been well raised and educated. AUSTIN became a commissioned public land surveyor May 12, 1852 for Lower Canada. April 14, 1872, he was appointed Deputy Surveyor of Dominion Lands (a title which became Dominion Land Surveyor in 1874). From 1881 to 1882 he was in charge of the surveys of Indian reserves in the Treaty 2 area and worked out of Winnipeg and Battleford. On June 7, 1883 he was in charge of the surveys of the Dept. of Indian Affairs in Ottawa, a post which he held until 1896. He died at his home "Beaver Lodge" in Ottawa, 27 December 1896.
