William Austin DSO was born in Cornwall, England.

William was born on 28 March 1871 in Saint Just in Penwith.[1][2] He was just one month old at the time of the 1871 census in England.[3]

His family arrived in New Zealand aboard the Caroline on 13 January 1876, in Nelson.[2][4] They departed from Westport on 4 February aboard Wallace (Master Conway) for anywhere south of there.[5]

He married Margaret Campbell in 1898.[6] She passed away suddenly on 22 May 1904.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Married Christina Blair on 20 February 1913,[13] in Christchurch. Officiated by Rev. J McKenzie.[14]

He had been an inspector of schools since at least 1914.[15][1]

Lived in Wellington as early as 1925, noted in that year's edition of Who´s Who in New Zealand and The Western Pacific as "inspector of technical instruction"[2] – specifically, lived at 23 North Terrace in the Wellington Suburbs in 1928.[17]

He passed away on 31 August 1931 aged 60,[18] a retired[19] civil servant.[20] He was buried on 2 September at plot 71, Z, *Public 2[19] (plot 58, row 5, block AA, area 11).[21]
