Biography

Peter was born at Jay, now Maine, in 1805, the son of Amos Austin.

He married twice: (1). Fanny Parks Newton married 24 July 1831 at Dixfield, Maine by Isaac Park, Justice of the Peace after filing an intention of marriage on 4 July 1831. A certificate was issued on 15 July 1831. (2). Desiah (Deziah) Curtis married at Coos County, Shelburne, New Hampshire on13 December 1849 by Oliver B Howe, Justice of the Peace. The record states that Peter was a resident of Dixfield, Maine and (Miss) Desiah Curtis a resident of Rumford, Maine. They were the parents of three known children.

The 1850 US census for Dixfield, Oxford County, Maine was transcribed as the "Aastis" family and lists Peter Aastis (44), Desiah (18), Aravesta H (18), Adrian (16), Amanda S (11), Francis E (8), Garrofield [sic] (6), and Peter L (3).

The 1860 US census for Sweden, Oxford County, Maine lists residents Peter Austin (54), a farmer, owns real estate valued at $700 and has a personal estate valued at $90, Desiah Austin (40), Garafelia [sic] Austin (female) (15), attends school, Peter L Austin (13), attends school, Eliza M Austin (9), attends school, Amos Austin (7), attends school, and Alzina P Austin (2). All were born in Maine.

The 1870 US census for Rumford, Oxford County, Maine for an area serviced by the Rumford Center Post Office, a household includes head of household Peter A Austin (58), a farmer who owns real estate valued at $800 and has a personal estate of $300, Desire [sic] Austin (50), keeping house, Amos M Austin (17), attends school, Lizzie M Austin (19), attends school, and Alzina Austin (12), attends school but cannot write. All were born in Maine.

The 1880 US census for Rumford, Oxford County, Maine lists residents of a home as Peter Austin (74), a farmer, his wife Desiah Austin (61), keeping house, and Amos M Austin (27), single, ill with nervous prostration. This report states Peter was born in Massachusetts while Desiah and Amos were born in Maine.

His date of death is an unsourced one cited on his Family Search profile # LJCK-HVZ, however, when his wife Desiah died on 30 Oct 1893 at Rumford, Maine, her death record stated she was widowed.
