Biography

JEAN BAPTISTE AUCOIN is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 11 Right, La Ville d'Archangel. Listed with him is his wife, Marguerite Theriot, and five children: Marie, Jean Baptiste, Rose Magdelaine, Rose Anastasie and Pierre.[1]

Pierre Firmin, a son of Jean Baptiste Aucoin and Marguerite Theriot, was born in Plouër-sur-Rance, Bretagne, France in 1774.[2]

When Pierre was eleven years of age, his parents immigrated to Louisiana aboard the ship La Ville d'Archangel with their five children, and disembarked in Spanish-ruled New Orleans, Louisiana on 3 December 1785. [3]

On 16 August 1796, he married Pelagie Daigle in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[4]

Their known children were:

  1. Florentin Aucoin (1798-1847)
  2. Pelagie Celeste Aucoin (c.1799-1853)
  3. Pierre AUCOIN 1801- (1801?) [5]
  4. Pierre Aucoin (1802-1831)
  5. Marguerite Aucoin (1805-)
  6. Marie Scholastique Aucoin (1808-)

It is believed that as a widower on 30 July 1812 he married Marguerite Venoy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[6] Whether they had children is unknown.

He died in Louisiana at an unknown date after 30 July 1812, the date of his second marriage.

I added profiles for the kids I found for this couple in the Baton Rouge Records. There is only one son named Pierre that I can see; not sure why there are two listed here. Maybe there were two and I just don't see one of them, but maybe there's actually just one Pierre.

The children's list comes from Karen Theriot Reader's family tree. She thinks that the one born in 1801 could belong to this family, but is not 100% sure because of the names: Pedro [JERMAONGA, sic], son of Pedro & Pellagia DAYGLE, baptized 22 May 1801 at age 1 month. Sponsors: Santiago COLLEMBEL & Rosa OCOIN. Paternal grandparents, Olivier & Maria JERMAONGA; maternal not given (SJO-1, 142). The names of the parents are similar, However the paternal grandparents were Jean-Baptiste & Marguerite, but maternal ones were Olivier and Marie Daigle. I marked him uncertain in the list until better sources are found.

I don't know for sure, but there is a source listed for a Pierre born before the one you made a profile for. So I would guess the first one died before the birth of the second Pierre, and was the 2nd was named in honor of the one who died. (It's also possible that two sons were named for St. Pierre, just like there were often several or even all sons named after St. Joseph or St. Jean, with a second name that most of them went by.
