Biography

Hamar Humphrey Arden was born on 24 May 1815 in Gresham, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom, son of Francis Edward Arden (1777– ) and Rachel Pinckard (~1778–1852).[1] [2] [1] [3] [2]

Hamar (25) married Alice Clisby (21) (born on 23 January 1819 in Holborn, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom) on 17 November 1840 in Holborn, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom.[4] Their children were:

In 1841, Hamar (20) was living in Islington St Mary, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. [6]

In 1851, Hamar (34), was a married head of household, Formerly Wine Merchant, in Brighton, Sussex, England. [7]

Hamar arrived in Taranaki with his wife Alice and family of three sons and two daughters in 1853 aboard the 'Cresswell' and according to newspaper accounts took up land at Willis Road (now Corbett Road), Bell Block. Within months of settling the Ardens found themselves literally in the midst of a Maori conflict, subsequently known as the 'Puketapu feud'.[8]

Hamar at first moved the family to Nelson in 1860 but returned in 1861 to commence practice as a professional artist, the first to be permanently domiciled in the settlement.[8]

Hamar did a great number of watercolours, often of the same views of the township, then largely confined to the lower Huatoki Valley. In contrast to his son Francis, his known works are rarely 'topographical' and have more photographic than aesthetic qualities. [8]

For service in the Taranaki Volunteers Hamar was granted confiscated land at Tikorangi. The Almanacs show that he practised as an artist into the 1870's in Gill Street, moving by 1877 to a property on Devon Street near the Eliot Street intersection and by 1888 was at a Courtenay Street property. [8]

Hamar died on 28 November 1895 in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand, aged 80.[9] He was buried in Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth, New Plymouth District, Taranaki.[10]
