The Post Office Directories from 1807-08 to 1815-16 list Elizabeth and her sister Jane as straw-hat makers at 8 North Bridge, Edinburgh.[3]
In 1816-17, the sisters were listed at two addresses: 8 North bridge and 27 Greenside street.[4]
Neither sister was listed in the 1817 to 1819 directories, but they were listed individually in 1819-1821 with Elizabeth working at 2 Terrace (or "2 high Terrace"[5]), Edinburgh and Jane at 8 North Bridge.[6][7]
In 1822 Elizabeth's husband William was listed at 2 James' Place, Edinburgh, Scotland, possibly also Elizabeth's residence. After her marriage, Elizabeth, now Christie, in 1824 to 1827 was listed at her pre-marriage workplace of 2 High Terrace, along with her brother Alexander.[9][10][11][12]
From 1828 to 1830 Elizabeth's work address was 5 Terrace Leith street, Edinburgh.[13][14][15]
In 1823 to 1826, her husband William was in the directories at 7 Leith Street, Edinburgh, while in 1827 to 1828 he had moved to 5 Terrace, Leith Street, Edinburgh, consistent with Elizabeth's change in work address.
From 1832 until his death in 1834, William was at 4 High Terrace, Edinburgh. In 1831 until at least 1834, Elizabeth was at 4 Terrace, Leith street, presumably the same address.[16][17][18][19]
After William's death, from 1835 to 1840, Elizabeth was listed as a straw-hat manufacturer, rather than shop. She continued to appear in the Post Office directories as Mrs Christie, even after her marriage to William James Brown in 1836.[20][21][22][23][24][25]
William James Brown and Elizabeth Archer married on 5 September 1836 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[26]
In the 1841 census, Elizabeth was living with her husband William Brown, his daughter Mary (25) and son James (15), and Elizabeth's daughters, Mary and Betsy Christie.[1]
In the 1841 Post Office Directory, Elizabeth, still listed with her first marriage name, was at 9 High terrace, still manufacturing straw-hats, but also offering lodgings[27][28]
In 1843 she was listed in the Post Office directory at 9 High terrace with her Brown surname.[29]
The last Post Office Directory entry for Elizabeth was in 1844 when she was no longer advertised as a straw-hat maker, but was only listed as taking in lodgers at 9 High terrace.[30]
Elizabeth Archer, nee Christie, nee Brown, died of dropsy at age 58 on 1 January 1849 at 6 Calton Street, St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Scotland.[2]
She was buried on 4 January 1849 in Edinburgh Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[31]
