Biography

William Thomas Archbold was born on the 14th December 1852 and christened on the 5th May 1853 in the parish of St. Leonards, Shoreditch, London; his parents recorded as Thomas Archbold and Harriet. [1]

UK Census Date 1851: Living with his parents, three siblings and three other individuals in Hackney Rd, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England. Aged 12 and at School.

In 1871, William Archbold was working in the furniture making industry as a leather cutter, and living in the home of William Bennett, a warehouseman and boarding house keeper in the parish of St Peter On Cornhill, London. He was aged 20 and single.

He married Esther Lodge in 1871 in Stepney, London, England.[2]

William, along with his wife Esther and 1 year old son William emigrated from England to New Zealand in 1874. They travelled on the ship Rooparell.[3]His parents were also on the ship.

They settled in Auckland at first where William established himself in business as a bootmaker in Pitt Street, in partnership with G. Foster. [4]

William and his family moved from Auckland to Christchurch. He passed away in 1905 at the age of 52.

Burial

William Archibald died of heart failure on Wednesday, 6th September 1905 aged 52 years and was buried Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch on the 9th of September.

His occupation was Bootmaker and he had been in New Zealand for 27 years. (Their first NZ child was born in 1875) [5]
