Biography
Robert Arbuthnot (b. c. 1760/1 - d. Feb 1809),[1] was the eldest son of Robert Arbuthnot (d. 1803), merchant of Peterhead,[2] and Mary Urquhart.
He was a British soldier turned diplomat who served between 1801 and 1806 as the Chief Secretary in Ceylon,[2] (as Sri Lanka was called till 1972) which had recently been transferred from Dutch to British military control, formally in 1796.
He attained the rank of Lieutenant with the 72nd Regiment.
Robert was Private secretary to Sir Robert Murray-Keith, FRSE and was an ambassador to the Court Of Vienna.
He died by drowning in 1809. He was a passenger on HMS Viperwhen the schooner was lost at sea between Cadiz and Gibraltar.
