Biography

María Lorenza Aragón was born in Belen, New Mexico, in 1784, the daughter of Ysidro Aragón and Antonia Montoya.^[1] She was married to Juan Cristóbal Sanchez in about 1808, and they had seven children:

1. Juan de Jesus Sanchez (1810-)
2. Mariano José Sanchez (1812-)
3. José Ramon Sanchez (1814-)
4. María Concepción Sanchez (abt.1804-)
5. María Gertrudis Justa, born 1821
6. Josefa Matea del Refugio, born 1823

Research Notes

1. María Lorenza's baptism record is recorded in the Albuquerque baptism book but says she was baptized in Tomé, most likely by a traveling priest visiting the smaller communities that did not yet have their own parish.^[1] Records in the Tomé Baptism book begin in 1793. Also, "de los Dolores" was almost certainly not given to her by her parents. The priest added this to the name of every baby he baptized, including the boys.
2. María Lorenza's marriage year is an unsourced estimate based on the birth of their first child.
