John Isreal Arnold is not the father of this Stephen Arnold Sr. Any pre-1700 persons require Source quotations. Stephen Arnold Sr. b. 1686 father was John Arnold Sr.. The "school master." Very interesting reading yet not accepted by all, His father was William Ramsden AKA Stephen Arnold.

Duncan - Thanks for calling my attention to this. I was hoping to benefit from this kind of scrutiny by joining Wikitree. I will correct. John

John, 4th cousin once removed, welcome to Wiki tree. 10 or 15 years ago I involved my mother in family history. Over the years I have gotten deeper and deeper in family genealogy. When I found Wiki, it was an eye opener. the fact that they require source material for ancestors born pre-1700 is an eye opener. I'm not as involved as many members. The internet has made so many resources available from our desk top. Two great sites for research are Archive.org, and Hathitrust Digital Library. you have to dig a bit. Myself if I don't have source material, I don't put it up on Wiki. It can be addictive, and My wife and siblings think I'm a little crazy and spend too much time on family genealogy. Oh well. Welcome to Wiki and enjoy.

My wife and children already thought I was crazy before genealogy and this only confirms it. I only started digging in once my mom died a couple of years ago and I got a stack of family photos from a 100+ years ago including some of great grandparents and even a couple of my 2x great grandmother. I didn't know her father's family and that is the branch by which we are related. (Believe it or not, I have only been to NJ once in my life.) Interesting stuff indeed. I have accessed some of the Archive.org stuff that isn't primary source but Hathitrust is new to me. I will check it out.

Now another unanswered question in the family tree. The history books remind us that 3rd Gr Grandfather Jacob Arnold was a confidant of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. His tree goes (4) Jacob Arnold b. 1727, (3) Samuel Arnold b. 1727, (2)Stephen Arnold b. 1686, (1)John Arnold b. 1655.

(1) 6th Gr Grandfather John Arnold, known as “The Schoolmaster” in Norwich before migrating to Windham, Connecticut. Arnold Name Change form William Ramsden to John Arnold The Mansfield Historical Society Provided that before John Arnold died in 1718 or 1719, he declared before a Connecticut Court that he was really William Ramsden !!!, the eldest son of Sir William Ramsden !! Lord of Bilton, of Kingston Hull Yorkshire. 6th Gr Grandfather John Arnold b.April 2, 1665 Kingston Upon Hull, York, England d. April 16, 1719 Mansfield, Hartford Connecticut. He married 6th Gr Grandmother Mary Bowley b.1654 Kingston Upon Hull, York, England d. November 23, 1701 Mansfield City, Mansfield Tolland Connecticut. They were married in 1978 in Killingworth, New London, Connecticut. Did they flee to be married? Both were born in Upton Hull, and they married in Connecticut. Their eldest son, Benedict (not THE Benedict. No relation) was born March of 1673 when Mary was 19 years old! Now John and Mary second born son, Bowley Arnold, upon hearing of his aristocratic ancestry, Went to England. I suppose he was looking for title or wealth. He left behind a wife and three children. Rather than finding wealth and title, he found another wife! He returned to the British colonies with her! Unfortunately, I can't locate the source William Ramsden that I would have support material for the above. On Archive.org, in Pedigrees of the county families of Yorkshire, 1874, they do identify That William Ramsden and Elizabeth Palms had second born son. William bap, at Almondbury July 14, 1652. I was questioned regarding William Ramsden alias John Arnold by a member on Wikitree, feeling he was trying to distance himself from the infamous Benedict Arnold Biographical and Genealogical History of Morris County New Jersey Shows (2) Stephen Arnold the son of William Arnold as first immigrant and father of the infamous Benedict Arnold. This is not factual (4) the infamous Benedict Arnold lineage (3)Benedict Arnold (2) Benedict Arnold (1) William Arnold.(2)Benedict Arnold I was born in England and migrated to Massachusetts Bay. The immigrated to Rhode Island with followers of Anne Hutchinson. He became Governor of Rhode Island. There are no Stephen Arnolds in their line that would fit the time frame.

typo married in 1678, not 1978.

Hello John,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
