Biography

Elizabeth Andrew, daughter of John Andrew, Esq., and Elizabeth Stratton[1] was probably born in Suffolk, where her parents lived, probably about 1443. See the research note below for more about this date.

Marriages and Children

Elizabeth married (1) Thomas Windsor, Esq., before 1 February 1465/6. They had:

Thomas died testate, 29 September 1485. In his will, dated 13 August 1479 and proved 15 February 1485, he named or mentioned:

  • wife Elizabeth (executor)
  • Dame Alice Wyche
  • sons Andrews (eldest), William, Anthony (youngest)
  • married daughters Elizabeth and Alice, and unmarried Anne
  • souls of his father and mother, John Andrews and Elizabeth his wife
  • William Puttenham "by my daughters' marriages."
  • a cousin, John Catesby.[6][3][7]

Elizabeth married second, Robert Lytton, Knt., before 28 October 1489 when, as "Robert Lytton, esq., and Elizabeth his wife of the manor of Stanwell, co. Middx" the couple were named in the Inquisition post mortem of Joan Brocas.[1][8][9] She was named Elizabeth Litton in her son's will.[4] There is no reliable evidence for any children of this marriage (see Research Note below).

Robert Lytton left a will dated 11 April 1505 that was proved 26 July 1505.[1] Elizabeth survived him and died after 22 June 1507 when, as "Dame Elizabeth Lytton, widow", of the "manor of Stanwell" she is mentioned in the Inquisition post mortem of William Brocas, Esq.[10]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth

Elizabeth was the oldest daughter of John and Elizabeth (Stratton) Andrews. Her parents were married in 1439, but her mother was born about 1425,[1] so it was probably a few more years before the marriage was consummated. If Elizabeth was born when her mother was 18, that puts her birth year about 1443, which works well with her first husband's birth year (1441 being age 11 in 1452)[1] and her 2nd son's birth about 1467.[1][11]

Formerly-shown Sons

Previously, there were two other sons attached to Elizabeth Statton and her husband, Thomas Windsor: Miles and John. They are not among the 11 children listed by Richardson[1] and their profiles do not cite any reliable sources. Miles died young, according to his WikiTree profile; John's profile has him dead in 1506 at age 37, but as shown above Thomas did not mention John in his will of 1479.

Birth Order of Children

As with most pre-1500 families, the order of birth is somewhat of a guess, though there are a few clues:

  • Richardson notes that Andrew is "2nd but first surviving son and heir, born Feb. 1467 (aged 18 in 1485)".[1]
  • Anthony is called youngest son in his father's will, dated 13 August 1479.
  • daughters Elizabeth and Alice were already married by the time he wrote his will, but Anne was not
  • Margaret, "prioress of the monastery of Sion" was identified as the last child in a secondary source written in 1764.[12]

Suggestion of a Daughter Faith from her Second Marriage

In Royal Ancestry, Richardson does not show Elizabeth having any children with her second husband, Robert Lytton. Sources deemed not reliable show a daughter, Fides (Faith) Lytton. If Elizabeth were born about 1443 and married Sir Robert Lytton by 1489, it seems unlikely she had another child. See the profiles of Robert Lytton and Fides Lytton for additional information and sourcing.

Disambiguation

Previously, this profile has been confused with another Elizabeth Windsor who appears to have married a different Robert Lytton. She has different parents and both appear to be of an earlier generation than this profile.

Recommend removal of two attached sons, John and Miles. Per the research note "Additional Sons," there are no reliable sources for their existence that I can find.

Thanks

This PPP profile needs to be merged with Windsor-124

Windsor-124, who is unsourced and with different parents, is currently shown as from a different and earlier generation. Research is needed to establish whether her parents - who are listed in a Hampshire Visitation - had a daughter Elizabeth and if so whether she married a Robert Lytton. So the profiles should not be merged.

... and approaching things from another direction, was there an earlier Robert Lytton (current profile Lytton-45) who married an Elizabeth (current profile Windsor-124)? And if so, who were her parents.

There is, and the proposed merge of the Elizabeths was meant as preliminary to the merge of L-45 with L-3.

I believe these profiles to be absolute conflations. I have added the "Easily Confused" template in lieu of the merge.
