Biography

John was born about 1680. He was the son of James Andrews and [Elizabeth--maiden name unknown]. He passed away about 1754.

"Son of James and Elizabeth Andrews (so mentioned in a 1704 Essex County deed of record), Joth Andrews was born about 1680 in Rappahannock County. He married first HANNAH or "ANN" STOCKDALE about 1706; and secondly, MARY STOCKDALE. John died in 1754 in Essex County. MARY then married Alexander Anderson. John Andrews' LWT was proved 19 Nov 1754 in Essex County (Wills X, pg 7)." Compilers: Robert Hugh White of Atlanta, Georgia, and Viola Maud Lewis of Ozark, Alabama, 1934.

The name (or names) of John Andrew's wife (or wives) is a matter of dispute: The oldest in-family claim that I have dates from 1920, and states that John was married twice--first to Hannah (or "Ann") Stockdale, daughter of Phillip Stockdale. After Ann's death circa 1748, John Andrews for her share of her father's estate (Phillip Stockdales' LWT was dated 03 Aug 1748 and proved 19 Nov 1754 in Essex County, VA). John Andrews married secondly to Mary (last name unknown, but possibly Wyatt or Stockdale--Ann's sister--?).

All of John Andrews' seven children are purported by early Smith and Andrews family researchers to be those of Hannah/Ann Stockdale. Five surviving children (John, Thomas, Mark, Agnes, Mary) and three grandchildren are noted in John Andrews' 1754 LWT (his two deceased daughters, Elizabeth and Hannah, were not). A recent claim (which I cannot verify) was made that John first married Hannah Tharpe, by whom the first three children were born. It is a fact, however, that after Hannah/Ann's death John married "MARY" who, as John Andrews' widow, subsequently married Alexander Anderson. Mary died in the Summer of 1769. That was recorded when John Andrews, Jr., brought suit against Alexander Anderson for failing to release Mary's estate.

Anyone researching this and other contemporary Andrews lineages should proceed very carefully--I've included the "Hannah Tharpe" claim just in case it's factual, BUT I CAN'T VALIDATE IT! If anyone can document that Hannah Tharpe was a first marriage, PLEASE CONTACT ME! ---Robbie Smith, 2019---
