A GOLDEN WEDDING

CELEBRATED AT SOUTH BROKEN

HILL.

Mr. AND Mrs P. ANDREWARTHA. [1]

Mr. and Mrs. P. Andrewartha, two old and highly respected residents of Morish-street, South Broken Hill, celebrated their golden wedding yesterday, surrounded by the whole of their children and grand children. The event was unique apart from its own significance, inasmuch as it brought together a family that had been separated for over a decade-some of the units of which had been scattered beyond the limits of Australia.
The celebration was the occasion of much rejoicing, with the bride and bridegroom of half a century ago as the central figures.

It was on December 30, 1862, at the Burra, South Australia, that, Mr. P. Andrewartha and Miss Mary Ann Stewart were married by the Rev. Lloyd (now deceased). Mr. Andrewartha was then a sturdy young Cornishman, in his 24th year, and Mrs. Andrewartha seven years younger. Mr. Andrewartha was born on July 11, 1839, and left the place of his birth, St. Ives, Cornwall, when 11 years of age, for Australia. His wife also claims Cornwall as her native land, having been born in Lammarmoor in the year 1846.

After living in the Burra for a few years, Mr. and Mrs. Andrewartha went to Moonta, where Mr Andrewartha worked in the Moonta mines for upwards of 20 years, and reared his family of five daughters and. one son. They came to Broken Hill 26 years ago, and have resided here ever since.

The married daughters, all of whom are at present in Broken Hill with their husbands and, families, are Mrs. W. Isaac, of Perth. W.A., Mrs. Robert Spry, of Johannesburg, South Africa: Mrs. J. Isaac, of Broken Hill ; Mrs. I. Pearce, of Moonta. S.A. The other members of the family are, Miss Ethel May Andrewartha, and. Mr. C. Andrewartha, both of Broken Hill.
The nine grandchildren of the aged, couple, were also present at the celebration, which.took place in the Mechanics' Institute, South Broken Hill last night.

The building was tastefully decorated for the occasion, and before the company sat down to a sumptuous golden wedding tea, Mr. and Mrs. Andrewartha received upwards of 80 invited guests, whose congratulations were as hearty as the reception.
The wedding tea was given by the children of the venerable pair in honor of the event. Mr. and Mrs. Andrewartha were accommodated with seats directly opposite a fine wedding cake, which rose out of the finely laid table almost to the marriage bell suspended from above in tones of orange and white.

The repast having been partaken of, Pastor E. J. Tuck, in felicitous terms, proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs. Andrewartha. Speaking with 24 years knowledge of Mr. Andrewartha,. Mr. Tuck characterized him a man who was honored and trusted by all who knew him. The whole family was a credit to the aged couple whose diamond wedding, he hoped, they would all live to celebrate.
The toast was supported by Mr. W. Stacey, of Moonta, a brother-in-law. of Mr. Andrewartha, who feelingly acknowledged the sentiments in a reminiscent speech.

"The Family" was the other toast honored at the instance of Mr. Constable, a suitable response being made by Mr. C. Andrewartha .
The remainder of the evening was given up to indoor games and music.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrewartha were the recipients of numerous congratulatory telegrams and messages, from distant relatives and friends, in addition to an array of presents. Each of the children presented the proud parents with cheques.

Mr. and Mrs. Spry, who came all the way from Johannesburg, intend remaining in Australia. Mr. Spry is a native of Moonta, and singularly enough his mother and father celebrated their golden wedding on December 4 last.
Mr. Spry was on the Rand, during the whole of the Boer war and was engaged in active service. His son, Willie, was born on the morning the war commenced.
