John married Mary Brown, daughter of Charles Brown and Elizabeth Ralston..[2]

John and Mary were tenant farmers in Scotland; in August 1840, they set sail on the "Tay" with 3 of their children from Greenock to New York (a voyage of several weeks of stormy weather). [3][4]

Charles Brown and Elizabeth Ralston emigrated to Argyle, Illinois with their daughter.

They went to Illinois via the Hudson River and the Great Lakes. They lived with John Greenlee's family initially, but then John Andrew bought part of the John Greenlee's claim and established a home in Harlem Township. [5][6] [7]

Andrew was one of the founders of the Scottish Settlement in Argyle, Illinois. He was the one who suggested naming the community Argyle. [8]
