ROBERT ANDERSON, VILLAGE'S OLDEST MAN, DIES TUESDAY Settle on Homestead in Cass County in 1880 - Was a Pioneer Farmer Last Tuesday noon the people of Sheldon learned with deep regret that Robert Anderson, Sheldon's oldest citizen had completed his stay on this earth and had passed to the Great Beyond. Although Mr. Anderson had not been in the best of health for the past few months it was not until a week ago that his condition became serious and his friends were shocked to hear last Saturday that he had but a few more hours to live. Mr. Anderson had been afflicted with asthma for several years and this seems to have developed into a new form which the doctors pronounced as congestion of the lungs. When this malady set in it became known that he would never recover, but he made a strong battle for life and just before he died he got out of his bed and was sitting in a chair when the end came. Mr. Anderson had never suffered any illness until a year ago when he met with a runaway accident. In this he was badly bruised and it is thought that he received internal injuries which tended to shorten his life. Mr. Anderson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, January 6, 1832, being a few months past the four score year mark. His eightieth birthday was celebrated last January when the old residents of Sheldon surprised him and presented him with a leather chair. When a young lad he emigrated with his parents to Canada, settling in Ontario. Here he was reared and educated and followed farming until 1880 when he moved to Cass County and entered a homestead claim to land in Eldred Township. He was among the first settlers of that locality and resided there until five hears ago when he moved to Sheldon. Mr. Anderson was twice married. He was first wed in Canada in 1854 to Susan Phillipo, a native of London, England. He first wife died on January 6, 1895 on his seventy-third birthday. ( **Please note that an article on Mrs. Anderson gives her death as Jan. 6, 1905 - ten years later. This would be correct since Robert was 73 in 1905) On March 2, 1907, he was again married to Mrs. Julia Morris, who survives him, and he has resided in Sheldon since that time. To the first union ten children were born, and as is very unusual in a family of this size, they are all living to mourn the loss of a loving father. They are: Mrs. William Flack, Langdon, North Dakota, Mrs. Newton Thompson, Kemona, Alberta, Canada; John Anderson, Enderlin, North Dakota; Gilbert Anderson, Sheboygan, Michigan; Mrs. W. T. Hunter, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; James Anderson, Dundurn, Saskatchewan, Canada; Mrs. Edward Driscoll, Mapleton, North Dakota; and Joseph Anderson, Buffalo, North Dakota. (Note that there are only eight of the ten children listed. The two who are not listed are Mrs. Joseph Small (Jane or Jennie), Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada and Robert Maitland Anderson, Dundurn, Saskatchewan, Canada). He also has three sisters who are living. They are Jennie M. Anderson, Carrington, North Dakota, Mrs. Samuel Herbert, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Mrs. Agnes Penn, Marceliene, Missouri. Besides these there are four step-children, Mrs. F. H. Sturgeon, Gackle, North Dakota; Mrs. Ray R. Jones, St. Paul, Minnesota; Miss Mae Morris, Sheldon, North Dakota and Arthur E. Morris, Logan, Montana. The deceased was a sincere Christian man and was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. His good, kind and loving disposition won life and long friends of all who knew him and Sheldon mourns the loss of a true and honest citizen. The funeral services which were in charge of the Masons, of which order Mr. Anderson was a member, had been set for Thursday morning at ten o'clock but as the body had not been embalmed, atmospheric conditions necessitated burial before that time. At six o'clock Wednesday afternoon the remains were tenderly conveyed by brother Masons to the Presbyterian church where they remained until 11 o'clock. The regular Masonic service was held that hour and the casket was taken to the cemetery where at low twelve, according to a time honored custom, it was quitely lowered to its last resting place.
