From Ancestry, from Robert's diary - April 15, 1865, Saturday a nice warm spring day made dull after such a crowd as there was yesterday. Sad news came by telegraph to Newton today that A. Lincoln, President of the U.S. was killed on last night at the theater in Washington City by some villain shooting him through the head. He lived till this morning at 7 o’clock he died. Also, Sec Seward had his throat cut by two ruffians about the same time while lying in his bed, but he was still alive at 7 o’clock this morning. It’s awful to think of to assanate two of our great men at the time of our rejoicing over our victory, awfull, awfull (the spelling though not always correct is the way it is spelled in the diary)

50th Wedding Anniversary: Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Anderson receive congratulations of host of friends surrounded by five of their children who came from a distance for the occasion, and many friends, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Anderson, of 318 Peterson Street, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday. In the afternoon they held a reception and again in the evening they received the congratulations of many more of their friends. They also received many beautiful gifts in memory of the occasion. Mrs. Anderson received her friends attired in a wedding gown made of the same material in which she was wedded fifty years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are wonderfully preserved and neither looks within several years their actual age, the husband being 72 and his wife 67. The five children who are here helping them celebrate are: Mrs. A. M. Hough, Newton, Iowa; Mrs. F. W. Biggs and daughter Gayle, Fort Dodge, Iowa; Rober E. Goyle, Fort Dodge, Iowa; Robert E. Anderson, who is in the real estate and loan business at Tacoma, Washington; Walter T. Anderson and wife of Shenandoah, Iowa, where the husband is engaged in the lumber business; Guy D. Anderson and wife of Oakland, Iowa, the husband being a furniture dealer. There were also many friends from Boulder and Denver in addition to those from Fort Collins. Robert C. Anderson and Mary Teft were married at Monroe, Iowa, July 3, 1859, by Rev. J. Currin, a Baptist minister. Of the six children born to them, five are living, the other being Mrs. Harry McCardell, who died in 1902 at the age of 27 at Newton, Iowa, leaving a daughter, Ruth, who is one of the sixteen grandchildren of the couple. Mr. Anderson was born at Florence, Washington County, Pennsylvania, February 16, 1837, and he moved to Pittsburgh with his parents in 1840 where his father engaged in the mercantile business. Five years later the family moved to Cochran's Landing, Ohio, where Mr. Anderson attended the log schoolhouse acquiring the rudiments as he sat on an unyielding slab bench, along with other sons of backwoodsmen when Ohio was considered a part of the great west. From the age of 12 upward he helped his father in the store. In 1855 the family again followed the westward course of empire and settled in Monroe, Iowa, where a year later the young man opened a mercantile establishment. He engaged in that line for many years in various Iowa towns and for ten years was engaged in the banking business. He came to Fort Collins in 1905, having amassed enough wealth to live in comfort the balance of his days. Mary Teft was born in Washington County, New York, near Union Village, September 6, 1842, and moved to Iowa with her family in 1854, where she was married five years later.

Fort Collins, July 3 -- Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Anderson of 515 East Laurel Street, this city, today observed their 60th wedding anniversary. They were assisted by a large number of friends who called on the couple as they were entertaining relatives from out of the city. No one would suspect that the groom of sixty years ago was old enough to have been married that many years ago, although his birth is registered as of the date Feb 16, 1837, at Florence, PA, nor does Mrs. Anderson appear as having been born Sept 6, 1842, Washington County, NY. Mary Tefft and R. C. Anderson were married in Monroe, Iowa, July 3, 1859. Of the three sons and three daughters born to them, all survive excepting a daughter who died in 1902. There are sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren surviving. Attending the celebration here today are their children, Mr. A. M. Hough of Newton, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Anderson and daughter of Tacoma, Washington, Mrs. F. W. Briggs, Guy D. Anderson and daughter of Kansas City, Miss Ruth McCardell, a granddaughter of Newton, Iowa, C. R. Anderson, a nephew of Des Moines For fifty years Mr. Anderson was in the mercantile and banking business in Iowa. He and his wife came here in 1905, having resided her ever since. Mrs. Anderson does her own housework while Mr. Anderson is engaged in a local mercantile establishment and is always the first one on the job and the last to leave. He delights to recall the conditions surrounding their wedding sixty years ago and how the only carriage in the county, hauled by a fine black team, carried them on their honeymoon.
