John Anders was born in 1841 in Eccleston, Lancashire. He was the grandson of John Anders (abt.1795-bef.1860) and Mary (Cheetham) Anders (abt.1793-bef.1880), possibly by their daughter Margaret Anders (bef.1819-), who was the unmarried mother of Henry Anders (bef.1839-). No birth registration or baptism has been found for John so far.

By June 6th 1841, John was living in Catchey Moss, Eccleston with his grandparents. His grandfather was a coal miner, as were two of his uncles.

By March 30th 1851, John was in Windle with his grandparents; his grandfather was still a miner.

John's grandfather died in 1860, and was buried on 14 Jan 1860 in St Helens Cemetery, in a family grave. His age was recorded as 64.

By April 7th 1861, John was still living with his grandmother, in City, Windle; his uncle Thomas was a bricklayer, his uncle William was a coal miner.
