In 1860 (1 Aug) the Alton family lived in Hardenburgh, Ulster, New York. Present were George (30, farmer), Rachel (24), Wesley, (7), Mary, (5), Martha (3), Eliza A (8/12), and a domestic helper named Mary (23). [1]
In 1865 (18 June) the “Aultin” family is living in a log-built home in Middletown, Delaware, New York. The family includes the parents George W (35, Farmer, born Delaware County) and Rachel (30, born Ulster County, mother of 7 children) as well as their children Westley (12, Ulster), Mary (10, Ulster), “Marthy” (8, Delaware), Liz Anne (6, Ulster), Harriet (4, Ulster), Antoinette (2 2/12, Delaware), and Adealia (6/12, Delaware). George is noted as an “owner of land”. [2] In 1870 (7 Sep), the Altons are still in Middletown, Delaware. Present are George W (45, farmer), Rachel (40, keeping home), Mary (17), Westley (16, farm laborer), Martha (14), Eliza (12), Adaline (10), Julia (8), Hattie (5), and William (2/12). The Altons real estate and estate values are reported as “1500” and “500”.[3]
Between 1870 and 1875, Mary married James E Fairbairn.
In 1875 (19 Jun), the Fairbairns are now noted to be in a framed home in Hardenburgh, Ulster. Present are parents John (63) and Elizabeth (54), Jarvin (29), James (26 now married), John F (23), Mary (19 wife of James E), Nelson (20, George (18, William (12) and daughter of James and Mary, Rachel (3/12). In this census, Jarvin is listed as having been born in Ulster County. [4] In 1880 (21 Jun), the “Farborn” family was located in Hardenburgh, Ulster, New York. Present were head of house John Fairbairn (68), his wife Elizabeth (60),and their children “Jarven” (34), William H (17), and George (23), all laborers. Also in the home is their son James (30) with his wife Mary (24) and their children Rachel (5), Francis (3), and Nelson (1). It’s noted that John and Elizabeth were born in Scotland while everyone else was born in New York. [5]
By 1900 (6 Jun), James (51, farmer) and Mary (45) had been married 26 years and were living in Margaretville, Middletown, Delaware, New York. Mary is noted as having had 12 children, 10 of whom were still alive. Living in the home were James Jr. (18 – Oct 1881, farm laborer), David (16 – Sept 1883, school), Niles (13 – Feb 1887, school), Thurber (11 – May 1889, school), May (8 – Feb 1892), and Charles (3 – Dec 1896). The Fairbairns owned their home. [6]
In 1910 (22 April) James (60) and Mary (55) had been married 35 years and were living in Middletown, Delaware, New York, with two of their children, May (18) and Charles (13). James was a dairy farmer and they owned their home.[7] In 1915 (Jun 1) many of the family were living on Huckleberry Hill Rd. James (65) and Mary (59) hosted their daughter Mae (23), son Charles (18), and grandson George (4). Living next door was their son Nelson (36) with his wife Anna (34), daughter Wyneta (14), daughter Agnes (12), son Alvin (11), and a lodger William McCann (50, farm laborer). In 1920 (30 Jan) James (70) and Mary (65) are still in Middletown and James is now a “general farmer”. The only child living with them at the time was their grandson George (9), though their son Charles (23) was living next door with his wife Nettie (20), and their newborn son Charles (3/12) [8]
Mary’s husband James died on 2 Feb 1922.
In 1925, Mary (69) was living on Main Street in Margaretville, Middletown, Delaware, New York. Also in the home are her grandson George (14) and a “lodger” (and her future second husband), William Decker (64, carpenter).[9]
On 23 July 1925, in Margaretville, Mary married William Decker. William's parents were Peter Alfred Decker (Born U.S.A.) and Adelia Vaunghan (born U.S.A.). This was the second marriage for both Mary and William. [10][11]
William Decker died on the 18th of March, 1929 in Margaretville. [12]
On the 7th day of November, 1929 in Arena, Delaware, New York, Mary Decker married Tallman L Beadle from Fleishmanns. Their marriage license was dated 30th of October, 1929, in Margaretville, Delaware, New York. Tallman, born 2 Aug 1855, was a 74 year old retiree, son of John Beadle, and Clarinda Blish. This was his third marriage. Mary’s noted date of birth is 7 Nov 1855. She was 74 at the time of this marriage, which was also her third. Her parents were George Alton and Rachel Banton. In 1930 (Apr 8), Mary (74) and Talman (74) were still married and living in Margaretville in a home valued at “5000”[13]
In 1940 (Apr 6), Mary (85) was a widower again, living on Upper Main Street in Margaretville in a home valued at “1500”. It’s noted that 6th grade was the highest that Mary completed. Living with her were her son Charles (43, mechanic), his wife Nettie (40), and their children Charles (20, mechanic), Forrest (19, farm hand), Harriet (16), Eleanor (14), and Rachael (10). [14]

Mother of Twelve Dies At Age of 88 Years
Mrs. Mary Beadle of Arkville, aged 88, died Saturday morning at the Margaretville hospital where she had been undergoing treatment for a few days. Mrs. Beadle’s maiden name was Mary Alton. She was born at Griffin Comers, now Fleischmanns, Nov. 6, 1855. She was married to James E. Fairbairn of Dry Brook and lived on the farm in Dry Brook now called Old Forge Cottage. To them were born twelve children, ten of whom survive her. They sold their farm in Dry Brook to George Gould and moved to the Margaretville farm now owned by Casper Bellows. After Mr. Fairbairn’s death, she bought a home in this village and lived there until a few months ago, when she sold the house and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. O. A. Todd of Arkville. Mrs. Beadle was thrice married. Her second husband was William Decker; her third, Tallman Beadle. Both preceded her in death. She is survived by ten children: Rachel Todd of Arkville, Frank of Bovina, Nelson of Arkville, Archibald of Seager, David of Pine Hill,
Niles of Margaretville, Thurber of Dunraven, James of Arena, Mrs. George McMurray of Dunraven and Charles of Kearney, N. J.; also two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Alton Clark of Margaretville and Miss Cora Alton of Fleischmanns, and thirty-nine grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and three great great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 children – Agnes and Harold. Her funeral was held Tuesday, March 30, at Lattin’s funereal chapel and burial was made beside her first husband, James Fairbairn, (1849-1922) at Margaretville. - Transcribed by Edna Atkin Herman.
