With the help of a researcher in Scotland we have sorted this out. Thomas born 1811 is the Uncle of Thomas born 1836. Thomas 1836 married Agnes Alexander 1839 in 1860. Agnes 1839 divorced Thomas 1836, 22 May 1877 due to long term domestic violence, while she was in Australia. She left him after birth of Janet in 1868 and immigrated to Australia where she lived with Thomas 1811as a housekeeper. She fell pregnant while in his home and had Agnes 1871 in his home. I have DNA connection to Thomas 1811 line but not to Thomas 1836. Thomas 1836 had custody of Elizabeth and Alexander and Agnes 1839 had Janet. Thomas 1836 and Elizabeth then immigrated to New Zealand in 1880 under the Vogel Scheme where he died 16 Feb 1889 and is buried in Orowaiti Old Cemetery, Buller, New Zealand. I do not know when or how Elizabeth came to Australia but I assume as Agnes, her mother had written to relatives in Scotland she kept in touch with her mother. Thomas 1811 referred to Agnes 1871 as his adopted daughter and left her money but not Janet who also lived in his home. He left the remainder of his quite large estate to Agnes 1839. She had 2 sons James P Ireland 1861-1864 and Alexander Ireland 1863-1871. Alexander drowned in Scotland. I have sources for all the above statements except for Agnes 1839 immigration and Elizabeth's to Australia.

(Before Lord Craighill) A St Andrews Divorce Case Lord Craighill heard evidence today in an action for divorce by Mrs Agnes Alexander or Ireland wife of Thomas Ireland, a fisherman in St Andrews. The parties were married in Broughty Ferry in 1860, and four children were born of the marriage. On account of the husband's bad treatment, pursuer left him in 1869, and she now alleges that he has been guilty of adultery with a girl named Isobel Young, who at present resides at Braehead, in the Parish of Carnwrath. After hearing evidence, the Lord Ordinary pronounced decree of divorce. Counsel for pursuer-Mr Scott Agents - Wallace and Foster L.A.

Thomas and Agnes must have travelled to Australia sometime between 1869 -1874 as Thomas died 1874 in Paddington, Sydney. (Not confirmed - and may be wrong Thomas). Agnes was using her maiden name when she married Robert ANDERSON 1877. Common Scottish practice, otherwise she would have married as Agnes IRELAND.
