Biography

Andrew Alexander was born on the 25 February 1824 in Bervie, Kincardineshire and christened on 7 March 1824 in Benholm, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the son of Colin Alexander and Anne Jamie.[1]

In 1851 he is a 26-year-old White Fisherman living with his Mum and siblings at Fore Street, Johnshaven, Kincardineshire, Scotland. [2]

Andrew married Christina Freeman on the 19 September 1852, Benholm. [3]

Andrew and Christina had the following children:

Isabella
Christina
Martha
Mary
Andrew
Alexander

By 1861 he has his own home in Fore Street, Johnshaven and has a family of four daughters. [4].

On the 13 May 1864 their son Andrew died from Smallpox which he had had for 13 days. [5]

10 years later three of his girls have been moved from the family home, but his 10 year old daughter Mary, a scholar and 4 year old son Alexander are living with him and his wife, Christina. [6]

On 29 January 1887, Andrew was out fishing on his brother Peter's boat the Martha no 8 M.E. The crew started pulling in their lines to go home due to the weather. At the height of the gale, a heavy wave filled the boat capsizing it and throwing its four crew into the sea. The boat No 691 ME with Edward McBay skipper saw what was happening and leaving their lines went to help. The crew of the Martha managed to hold on to the gunwale and the mast. After a while Andrew let go of the gunwale to try to reach the oars but was unsuccessful and when trying to get back to the gunwale sank and drowned. About an hour later the rescue boat managed to reach them and rescue Andrew's brother Peter and his nephew John, but as they were away to get Alexander Philip[7], he sank with exhaustion before the rescue party could haul him in and disappeared from sight.
