John was born about 1841. He was the son of James Alexander and Bell Grieve.
In 1851 he lived with his father and step-mother Mary Alexander nee Carnegie, and his half-sisters Ann, Elizabeth and Martha in Fore Street, Johnshaven.[1]
In 1861 he is still living with his family at Fore Street, Johnshaven but is now listed as a Fisherman aged 20.[2]
On the 7 April 1869 he and his half-brother Robert drown when their boat capsized after being hit by a wave near the harbour. See Joseph Blues for newspaper accounts of the tragedy. His poor step-mother Mary and mother of Robert witnessed the tragedy.
