Thomas Alexander and Margaret Stewart were married on 12 May 1804 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland.[3][4] They had five children:

  • Isabel, born on 17 Mar 1805 in Alloa.
  • Margaret, born on 30 Apr 1807 in Alloa.
  • Thomas, born on 24 Oct 1809 in Alloa.
  • Jean, born on 10 Jul 1811 in Alloa.
  • John, born on 16 Jun 1813 in Alloa.

Thomas was a carter, according to his daughter Margaret's death certificate.
