Biography

Josephine was born in 1833. She married Tiziano Devido, probably in Pedaso, Italy.[1]

Family recollections indicate that Giurino married someone named Raffaela in Monessen, PA. and they had no children. The family also remembers Giurino's mother Josephine refusing to leave Italy after his father, Tiziano, abandoned the family to work in Greece. Giurino finally persuaded his mother to come to the United States.

Josephine is living with "Ralph" and Mrs. Raffaela Devido in Monessen in the 1910 US Census. Ralph immigrated in 1898 and Josephine in 1908. She is 73 years old which would put her birth year at 1837 vs her death certificate which says she was born in 1833. She is an alien, a widow who had 8 children with 6 still living. She can read and write.[2]

Agosta is decidedly Sicilian, even if a lineage appears, perhaps not secondary, in the Mantua area and one in the Roman province, which should derive from the toponym Agosta (RM), Agosti is typical of Lombardy and upper Emilia, Agostini is widespread throughout central-southern , Agostinis is very rare from Udine, Agusti and Agusto, absolutely rare, are probably due to transcription errors or dialectal modifications, D'Agosto, not very widespread, has a Friulian lineage, De Agostini is very widespread throughout the north with a lineage also in Cagliari, almost all originate, directly or through patronymics and hypocoristics, from the Latin cognomen and nickname Augustus (consecrated to augurs) title of dignity of the Roman emperors, it can also be referred to the month of August, as a child born in August, the Sicilian nucleus may also mainly derive from the toponym Augusta (SR). Traces of these surnames can be found in Bergamo in 1500, in 1513 a certain Oliverio Agosti, a distinguished jurist, was designated by the citizens of Bergamo as patron of their interests and ambassador to the Spanish viceroy in Milan.[3]

Josephine died March 12, 1912 at the age of 78 in Monessen, PA. She was living at 328 Donner Avenue. The informant was her son, Guirino Devido. She died of pulmonary congestion.[4][5]
