Biography

James was born in 1846, the eldest son of James Agg-Gardner of Hadley House, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire[1] and his wife Emily Hopkyns Northey.[2] He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge.[3]

James was a barrister and member of the Inner Temple (1873). He served as Justice of the Peace for Gloucestershire and Lord of the Manor for Cheltenham as well as serving as MP for Cheltenham (1874-1880).[1]

In 1891 James was said to be a member of the Garrick Club, the Carlton Club and St Stephen's Club, and to be living at Evesham House in Cheltenham.

James passed away in 1928[4] and was buried in Cheltenham.[5] James was the oldest serving member of Parliament when he passed away in his rooms at the Carlton Club, London although his obituary noted that he not spoken on a bill for twenty five years before speaking prior to his death on the topic of the Hire Purchase Bill.[6] Probate to James's estate was granted on 14 September 1848 to Arthur Agg-Gardner.[7]
