Biography

Robert Addison (1873-1951) was born in Clifton, Westmorland on the 15th September 1873. He was the son of Edward Addison, a mariner, and Priscilla Orphan. ^[1] He was christened on the 9th November 1873 at Clifton ^[2] and he grew up there. ^[3] He is missing from 1891 census (likely at sea).

In 1899 he was living aboard the ship "Solo" which at the time of his marriage was docked in Liverpool and he was a marine engineer. He married Harriet Cordon on the 15th August 1899 at St Peter, Liverpool. ^{[4] [5]}

They lived in north Liverpool in Harlech Street, Walton initially ^[6] then Kemlyn Road, Anfield by 1906 by which time they had 2 children. ^{[7] [8] [9]} Before 1920, though, they had come south of the city to Toxteth Park where they moved around several addresses there, Allington Street in 1920, Belvidere Road in 1925, ^[10] Holmefield Avenue, Aigburth then Muirhead Avenue East by 1938 when Robert had a change of occupation giving up engineering to open a hardware and chandlery business. ^[11]

It was whilst they lived there that Robert was involved in a traffic accident at a pedestrian crossing on Aigburth Road in February 1939 knocking over a male who was injured. Robert was charged with dangerous driving but claimed the crossing was badly positioned and not sighted until almost upon it. ^[12] After viewing the crossing, the magistrates were somewhat critical of it's position, convicted him of a lesser offence and Robert was fined £2. ^[13] The injured male, however, suffered partial paralysis following the collision and subsequently sued Robert, winning damages of £2,125. ^[14]

They also moved around this time to Garston Old Road, Grassendale nearby. ^{[15] [16]} They lived there throughout WW2 then moved to Bertram Road, Sefton Park. ^[17] They still lived there in 1951 when he was admitted to Sefton General Hospital. He died in hospital on the 21st May 1951 ^[18]

and was cremated on the 24th May 1951 at Liverpool Crematorium. ^[19]
