Biography

Augustus Lee "Gus" Adcox was born 20 Nov 1879 in Hoke County, North Carolina.[1] He was the son of J. W. Adcox and Mary Shepherd.[2]

On the 1880 United States Census, Augustus L. "Acocks," age zero, was enumerated in the household as the son of John W. "Adcocks" and his wife Mary Ann. He was the youngest of seven children. The family was living in Lumber Bridge, Robeson County, North Carolina.[3]

On the 1900 United States Census, Augustus Adcox, age twenty, recorded as having been born in Nov 1879, was enumerated in the household of John W. Adcox and his wife Mary. Augustus was one of three of John W. Adcox's son enumerated. Other members of the household were John W. Adcox's daughter-in-law, niece, and nephew. Augustus, who was single, was working as a farm laborer.[4]

"Gus" Adcox was married to Bettie Jane Raynor on 8 Sep 1901 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.[5][2]

On the 1910 United States Census, Augustus L. Adcox was enumerated as head of household. Other members of the household were his wife Bettie J. and three children, Hattie J., Donnie L., and Ethel M. The family was living in Gray's Creek Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Augustus' occupation was recorded as farmer.[6]

Augustus L. Adcox completed a World War I Draft Registration Card on which he stated, in addition to his date of birth, that Bettie J. Adcox was his nearest relative and that his occupation was farmer. He was of medium height and build and had black hair and blue eyes. He had no disqualifications to be drafted.[1]

On the 1920 United States Census, Gus Adcox was enumerated as head of household. Other members of the household were his wife Betty J. and his children Hattie, Donald, Ethel, Kenny, Arthur J., Alice A., and Lula M. The family was living in Gray's Creek Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Gus' occupation was recorded as farmer.[7]

On the 1930 United States Census, Agustus (spelled as recorded) L. Adcox was enumerated as head of household. Other members of the household were his wife Betty J. and his children John K., Aurthur J., Alice A., Lula M., Floyd A., and Cyrous C. The family was living in Grays Creek Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Augustus Adcox's occupation was recorded as farmer.[8]

On the 1940 United States Census, Guss (spelled as recorded) Adcox was enumerated as head of household. Other members of the household were his wife Bettie and two of his sons, Floyd and Jackie. The family was living in Grays Creek Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Guss' occupation was recorded as operator of a filling station.[9]

At the time of his death Augustus Adcox's occupation was described as a retired merchant and farmer.[2]

He passed away 25 Nov 1945 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina.[2] He was buried in Marvin United Methodist Church Cemetery, Grays Creek, Cumberland County, North Carolina.[10][2]

After his death, Bettie J. Adcox filed a statement with the Superior Court of Cumberland County, North Carolina in which she stated that her husband A. L. Adcox had died intestate. She requested to be named Administrator of his estate which she estimated to be valued at $1300. In the document their children were named.[11]
