Notes

Note N514
According to his army discharge papers, James had enlisted in the 80th Regiment of Foot on 28 Aug/1818, his seventeenth birthday, at Colchester, Essex, for unlimited service. However, he was discharged on 20 Nov/1821 with a hernia caused by exertion while on recruiting service in May, 1819; he had served three years and 85 days pensionable service including one year prior to age 18. He was a private, 5' 5" tall, with brown hair, grey eyes and a fair complexion, and was a gunmaker by trade. His conduct was "good". In 1841, James was a Chelsea Pensioner and innkeeper of the Orwell Inn on Lower Orwell Street, Ipswich; according to his obituary, he was "Inn keeper" at the Orwell Inn (now demolished) since at least 1835.[6]
