Biography

Wife named Janneke, father implied to be named Hendrick. Laurens Ackerman died between 3 Mar 1639 and 31 Aug 1641.

Research Notes

Many believe that the family name is one of the oldest in Europe. Most of the families probably lived in Flanders originally, but many of the early records have been destroyed in the various wars, as this area has always been a battlefield. The earliest date verified is Hendrick Ackerman, born in Ghent, Belgium in 1260. ^[1]

Frans Ackerman, grandson of Hendrick, raised an army and lead a revolt against the oppression of the Count of Flanders in 1370. Although he won several battles, defeating the troops of the King of France, eventually in 1385, due to the failure of promised English assistance, the war was lost. Although the fight for democracy did not succeed, better conditions were gained.
