Mcquown was the name they were called in on most sources. The name McEwen was adopted by some in the family in later years while the rest remained with the McQuown spelling. Since most early settlers were illiterate, those making lists of name for taxes, properties, militia muster rolls used phonetic spelling for the name. This has resulted in as many as 25 spellings for one man , John McQuown b. 1745 m. Margaret Herin who lived most of his life in Mount Bethel, Ntrthampton Co., PA. after his ma

I am step (?) decendant of many McQuowns (My step-granmother was married to an adopted decendant. I have added tons of stuff on Ancestry.com for Mcquown, Ross, etc. I have a scrap book with many photos and notes..
