John Ripley Madison, born in the late 1700s in what is now Portland, Maine, was my great-great-great grandfather and I have never been able to find out who his parents were. He was taken in as an orphan by Commodore Edward Preble and died in early 1820 when the Naval ship he was commanding, the Lynx, went down between Georgia and Jamaica.
