Both death of possible father and Hugh Baine's death have untranscribed records

Calling all cursive readers!

Maybe we can confirm whether Murdoch was his father from Murdoch's estate file?

"North Carolina Estate Files, 1663-1979," database with images, FamilySearch: indexed 12 Mar 2018, Murdoch Bane, 1793; citing Cumberland, North Carolina, United States, State Archives, Raleigh; FHL microfilm 1,853,959.

Then, on Hugh's probable estate file marked on his profile, maybe something can confirm his family constellation (source is on the profile).

Lastly, a Scotland's People baptismal record match is compelling, but it places his father as Robert (source is on the profile).

Thanks for any analysis of these records that you might provide!

I've been looking at this. If Hugh was born in 1730 and emigrated to North America in 1740 (age 10). Also, while not definitive, The Hugh for the baptismal had a sister Helen but no other siblings listed in Thurso. There was a John Bain with father Murdoch in Thurso (1712). Need more information to nail down relationships. Scotland research needs something concrete to identify an individual. dates or places help a lot.

When looking at Murdoch's estate file there isn't anything to indicate relationships. Given how few words are handwritten, there isn't anything to extract other than what you already have.

The probate file for Hugh gives a wife Mary and heirs of WIlliam WIlliams and were legatee's of Hugh (and what they were given) but family relationships are not specified.  A John Bain was an administrator so possibly a son, brother or other relative. Nothing definitive. Most of the file is detailing paying debts after selling the estate.

Looked at things from a different direction. If Hugh and John were brothers (search 1700–1740):

Parents: Allexander Baine in Tain

  • Hugh born or baptised 31 Mar 1720
  • John born or baptised  10 Apr 1724
Parents: John Bain in Nairn
  • Hugh born or baptised 10 Jun 1711
  • John born or baptised 13 Oct 1714
Parents: John Baine / Helen McIver in Cromarty
  • Hugh born or baptised 6 May 1724
  • John born or baptised 1720

Those candidate brothers seem partially viable, but in each pairing, the 1740 migration that is described would seem somewhat improbable since, reportedly, they separated upon arrival (excerpt below of the alleged scenario).

I'm somewhat inclined to give the greatest weight to Murdoch Bain as the father...

Anyway, I rejected Hugh, son of Robert based on the 1730 christening and have updated the profile accordingly.

I couldn't find any Scotland specific categories to add. Neither Inverness nor Inverness-shire is present as a standalone category, and frankly, I do not know the source of that birth location that was original to this profile before I updated it with Hugh, son of Robert's information.

One statement from the "earliest" narratives could be interpreted to imply [[Category:Irish Immigrants to Scotland]]:

John and Hugh Bain, brothers, landed from Scotland (or Northern Ireland), about the year 1740. They came up the Cape Fear River, and John, the elder brother, settled at or near "Kelly's Cove" in the Cape Fear, about thirty miles above Wilmington, in Bladen County then and now...
