Joseph was born about 1760. He married Sarah White about 1781 in North Carolina. Sarah's half brother was Colonel James White of Knoxville, Tennessee.[1][2]
Sumner County, Tennessee was erected November 17, 1786 by the North Carolina Legislature and named in honor of General Jethro Sumner, an officer of the Revolution. In 1779 a settlement of about a dozen families made at "Bledsoe's Lick" now "Castalian Springs." Forts were build by a number of the earliest pioneers- John Morgan, Mahor James White, Col. Sanders, Jacob Zigler, Capt. Joseph Wilson. [3]
26 Jun 1792, a group of Cherokees, Chickamaugas, with a few Creek allies, surrounded the the stockade. They were led by the Cherokee Chief, Little Owl.
The fort was occupied by the families of Jacob Zeigler and Joseph Wilson. Both families had several children, and with a few Negro slaves, they totaled 28 people.
Joseph was shot in the foot. Jacob Ziegler and two Negro men died when the his house burned with them in it. Archie Wilson was hit on the head with a rifle and died. [4]
Joseph Wilson died in 1833 in Sumner, Tennessee. His will was probated May 1833. Mentioned in the will: Wife Sarah, sons James T Wilson, Moses Wilson and Montillion Wilson. Daughters Polly Wilson, the five children of Sarah Barham, Eleanor, Elizabeth, Anne. [5]
