William was born in 1854 in Nelson, New Zealand. He is the eldest son of Captain William T. Taylor and Agnes Moore.
He was educated at Nelson and when aged 13 went to the West Coast to do transport work on the rivers of that district. He returned to Nelson about 7 years later and got work on a coastal vessel where he worked his way up his certifications to become a master mariner. He was captain of a number of vessels including the E & U Cameron, Comet, Awake, Clio Bell, Rock Lily, and Kestrel.[1] He was also the master of the ketch Huon Bell. His mother brought a court action against him for lack of support and maintenance in 1887[2] and again in 1895. [3][4][5]
In 1880 he married Miss Ellen Packwood, daughter of Benjamin Packwood of Kaiapoi. They had a number of children including:
He was a keen rower.[7]
In 1901 he moved to Wellington where he was in charge of the vessel Admiral ferrying between Wellington and Eastbourne. He later worked for the Westport Coal Company, and the Wellington Harbour Board. He retired in 1921 and moved to Kaiapoi.[8]
He died on 13 September 1935 at his residence in Sewell Street, Kaiapoi aged 81.[9] He was interred at Kaiapoi Church of England churchyard.[10]
