John Smith was born in 1776 in Essex, England.
John Smith, age 30, was tried and convicted of embezzlement at Chelmsford, 13 Mar 1809, sentenced to 14 years transportation, and sent to NSW , one of 200 convicts transported on the 'Indian', departing England July 1810, arriving on 16 December 1810.
John married Jane Falkard at St John's, Parramatta in 1814[3].
They had children baptised in NSW[4]:
All these children were baptised at St Luke's CofE, Liverpool (CF = Church of England, Liverpool, St Luke's).
10 September 1818 - Of Parramatta. On list of persons to receive grants of land in 1818
17 August 1819 - A land grant of 50 acres issued by Governor Macquarie unto John Smith. The land was in the District of Airds, bounded on the North by Masterson's farm bearing east 30 chains on the east by a south line of 18 chains, on the south by a west line of 30 chains and on the west by a north line of 18 chains. John could not sell the land for five years and there were the usual Reservations. App.12603 at p.95.
31 January 1820 - John Smith - Conditional Pardon - Ship "Indian" 1810, Native place Essex, Trade or Calling - labourer, Place and Date of Trial - 13 March 1809 at Essex Assizes. Term 14 years, height 5' 8", complexion fair-ruddy
24 July 1820 - Proclomation acknowledging obedience on the accession of King George IV countersigned at Liverpool on 7 July 1820 (Reel 6049; 4/1745 p.167 A.O.N.S.W.) Shows signature of John Smith.
1820 - Petition for Land Grant. John Smith states that he arrived on the "Indian" received a C.P. of 14 years sentence, holds position of Keeper of H.M. Gaol at Liverpool, married, 2 children and 7 head of cattle received 50 acres.
1823 Mar 21, Apr 2,19 - Contractor for carriage of stores from Parramatta to Emu Plains. Re replacement of a horse lost in the Nepean River with a horse from the Government Herds on 12 months credit
21 September 1824 - Innkeeper. Recommending that favourable considerable be given to Daniel Jackson's petition for a ticket of leave
November 1828 - Census John Smith 52 years, Free by Servitude "Indian" 1810, 14 years, Superintendent to Mrs Beverley. Goulburn (Georges?) Plains. John had 1 horse 93 cattle. Georges Plains, South Coast and Illawarra, New South Wales, Australia
He passed away in 1847 and is buried with his wife in Bungendore cemetery[5] [6]
