William Newcomb was the son of Captain Joseph Newcomb (1683-1733) and Joyce Butler.[1]
"William Newcomb4 (Joseph³, Andrew², Andrew¹), b. April 7, 1721, in Edgartown, Mass., removed with his parents when 11 years old to New Jersey; his wife, Pleasant, d. Feb. 28, 1791, ae 57; and he d. Apr. 7, 1785, both in Cumberland Co. They resided in town of Fairfield, between Newport and Cedarville. He built the house which his son Butler afterward owned and occupied. Over the door he cut in stone his name, date of birth, etc."[2]
William Newcomb of Cumberland and Pleasant Long of Stow Creek were married or received license to marry on 31 May 1759.
He had five children with his first wife, name unknown, and five with his second wife, Pleasant Long.[3]

Reuben, m. and had Edith. He served in the War of the Revolution; d. Nov. 1, 1789 in Fairfield, N.J.
Ruth, m. and emigrated west.
Judith, m. Daniel Garrison; 2d ______ Jacquet. Her ch. by 1st husband were Daniel, Reuben, William and John.
William Newcomb was guardian of his wife's nephews Jonathan, Uriah, and Constantine Long after their father's death; there are records for release of guardianship in 1769.
His wife "Pleasent" was granted administration of his estate 5 May 1785; the inventory was completed on 21 April.[4]
His gravestone in Dividing Creek Baptist Cemetery[5]
"In memory of William Newcomb, who departed this life April 7, 1785 Aged 64 years."
