Joannes Bernardus Witte was born on or a few days before 22 February 1717 in Hollage, Wallenhorst, Iburg, Osnabrück, Heiliges Römisches Reich, son of Joannes Bernardus Witte (~1680– ) and Catharina Klumpe (~1681– ).^[1] He was baptised in the catholic church St. Alexander in Wallenhorst on 22 February 1717.^[1] His godparents were Jurgen Klumpe and Maria Remme, and his baptismal witnesses were Bernd Sibenburgen, and the Lutheran Regine Grone.^[1]

Joannes had a sister, Anna Maria Gertrudis Witte (baptised 30 July 1713).

On 4 October 1734, Joan Bernd Witte became the baptismal witness for this niece Anna Maria Witte in the catholic church St. Alexander.^[2]

As the heiress of the Schulte zu Malbergen farm went to enter services at Malbergen Abbey in 1736, the farm reverted to Malbergen Abbey. The abbess then gave the farm to the 19-year-old Anna Catharina Margaretha Kuhlmann, a relative, who married Joannes Bernardus Witte (age 27) from Wallenhorst parish on 13 October 1744 in Malgarten, who henceforth held the farm name as his last name.^[3] The dowry consisted of 60 thalers, 2 cows, 1 horse and 1 foal. Between 1750 and 1760, the farm received three further loans totalling 100 thalers from the monastery. ^[4]
