Biography

Veria Belle Warren was born 22 Jul 1901 in Arkansas to Robert Monroe Warren and Rosetta "Rosa" Cowan, the 1st of 5 children. After her father's death in 1911, Rosa's mother married Claude Kendrick. So in addition to her 4 siblings, Belle had at least 6 half-siblings. Belle and Ruel Ware married 7 Apr 1918 in Arkansas. They had 8 children, but only 3 survived to adulthood. During their marriage Belle and Ruel lived in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and briefly in California. But most of their married life was lived in Arkansas on family land from the Ware family. Belle died 24 Jun 1954 in Arkansas. I think she died at home, but I'm not sure about that. Belle had breast cancer throughout her body at her death. Her eldest daughter, Rosie, cared for Belle through her final illness. Her next daughter, Susie, put off her wedding to care for the home during Belle's illness.

Another story Mom told me was about their trip to California. It was sometime during WWII. Grandpa Ware was in California working, I think he was doing farm work but don't know for sure. This is the story as Mom told it: Mom's oldest sister had a boyfriend in California she wanted to see. Also as I said Grandpa Ware was already in California working. Mom's sister urged Belle to take the family out to California to be with Grandpa Ware. I guess it didn't take much urging, Belle must have been missing Ruel. So Belle bought a truck. She'd never driven before so she had the salesman take her for a quick drive to learn how. Then she loaded the kids and headed to California. They had a bit of excitement at Hoover Dam. As it was wartime the dam was guarded. Guards did a headcount before they headed across the dam. They did another headcount when the truck reached the other side and Uncle Orbie was missing. Mom said they looked and looked until Belle persuaded them to let her look. Belle got out and found Uncle Orbie where he'd rolled up in some bedding or something and gone to sleep. The rest of the trip must have been uneventful. But at the end, when they joined Grandpa Ware, the engine in the truck was ruined. Belle had driven all the way from Arkansas to California and didn't know she need check and add oil, or maybe water, or both.

Mom told me her mother knew about folk medicine and took food and medicine to folk who were ill. Mom said Grandpa Ware had told her not to do that but she kept doing it behind his back. Mom said he found out about it at Belle's funeral, when people kept coming up to tell him all she'd done for them, and he started crying. I always assumed Belle learned folk medicine from her mother, because her mother's mother was said to be Cherokee. I've since read in a family letter Belle's grandfather Jesse Cowan was a folk doctor. I don't know if that's true or if it's just a family story. But I feel sure Belle, knew about herbal medicine and was a midwife because that's one of the stories Mom told me about her mother.

I never met my grandmother Veria Belle (Warren) Ware, she died of breast cancer before Mom married. Actually, Mom and Dad had planned to marry but put of the wedding because of Belle's final illness. Mom returned home to care for the house, cooking and cleaning and such I believe. And Mom's older sister returned home to care for Belle. As far as I know Belle had only one marriage. At age 17 (Mom said 16) she married Ruel Ware. They had 8 children together, only 4 survived to adulthood. Their marriage ended with her death. For some reason I have it in my mind she was called Belle by Grandpa Ware. Though I don't know if that's what others called her.
