Mrs. Rue McCubbin Zimmerman Dies

Miss Rue McCubbin was born in Hancock County, Illinois, on November 13, 1864, and passed away in Los Angeles, California, on April 28, 1950, at the age of 85 years. She was the daughter of Thomas B. and Martha Cameron McCubbin, who were the offsprings of two pioneer families that were among the group that established the first white settlement in the eastern part of Hancock County. That was prior to the establishment of Carthage, the county seat. The McCubbins were from Green County, Kentucky and the Camerons were from White County, Tenn.

After completing her studies in the Oak Grove grammar school, Miss McCubbin enrolled in what is now Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana. Soon after completing her school work at Valparaiso, Miss Rue McCubbin married Robert E. Zimmerman of Goshen, Indiana, a fellow student at Valparaiso, on Feb 20, 1883.

The first year of their marriage, the Zimmermans made their home in western Missouri. When Mrs. Zimmerman's father moved to California in November 1883, the Zimmermans moved back to Illinois, and took charge of the farm until it was sold in September, 1885, when they moved to Red Bluff, California.

The Zimmermans lived consecutively in the four following counties of that state: Tehama, Fresno, Madera, and Los Angeles.

In 1936 the Zimmermans purchased life memberships in the Hollenebeck Home in Los Angeles. This is considered one of the best homes for elderly people to be found anywhere. Mrs. Zimmerman was personally acquainted with practically every one of the 300 members of the Hollenbeck Home and could call each one's name.

Instead of waiting for the formal annual meeting when the new members would receive their greeting as a group, Mrs. Zimmerman would extend her personal welcome after each new member was thoroughly settled. Such a sincere and warm greeting made a lasting effect upon the members and was one of the reasons for her unusual popularity.

Two daughters were born to the Zimmermans, both of whom died during the flu epidemic of 1929. They passed away just six days apart. One was 43 and the other 45 years old.

Mr. Zimmerman passed away in 1939. Relatives surviving include: John C. McCubbin of Los Angeles, brother; Mrs. Dave Emerson, a sister, of Paso Robles, Calif.; Mrs. Wilbur Wade, a grand daughter, of Englewood, Calif.; Miss Valerie Hill, great grand daughter, also of Englewood, Calif.; Bruce McCubbin, a nephew, of Fresno, Calif.; and Mrs. Grace McCubbin Cheatham, a niece, of San Gabriel, Calif.
